DUBAI: India began their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign on a high note, securing a commanding victory over Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Shubman Gill's masterful innings and Mohammed Shami’s lethal bowling ensured Rohit Sharma’s side made an emphatic statement in their opening match.

India vs Bangladesh

After winning the toss and electing to bat, India posted a formidable total of 298/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Opener Shubman Gill led the charge with a scintillating 121 off 112 balls, anchoring the innings with class and precision. His partnership with Virat Kohli, who contributed 67 off 58 deliveries, laid a solid foundation for India.

The middle order chipped in effectively, with Hardik Pandya providing the finishing touch with a quickfire 42 off 28 balls. Bangladesh’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs, with Taskin Ahmed (2/54) and Mustafizur Rahman (2/61) managing to pick up wickets but failing to halt India’s momentum.

Chasing 299 for victory, Bangladesh faced immediate setbacks as Mohammed Shami wreaked havoc with the new ball. The veteran pacer dismissed opener Tanzid Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto in his opening spell, reducing Bangladesh to 25/3 within the first 10 overs.

Despite resistance from Mushfiqur Rahim (54) and Mahmudullah (47), Bangladesh struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja spun a web around the middle order, each claiming two wickets. Shami returned to clean up the tail, finishing with figures of 4/37 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 212 in 45.3 overs.

India’s bowling attack lived up to expectations, with Shami leading the charge, well supported by Kuldeep (2/42) and Jadeja (2/35). Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel also chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring Bangladesh never found a way back into the contest.

This victory further cemented India’s dominance over Bangladesh in ODI cricket. The two teams have faced off 42 times in the format, with India winning 33 of those encounters, while Bangladesh have claimed victory in just eight matches.

What’s next?

With this win, India secure crucial points in Group A and will now turn their focus towards their highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23 in Dubai. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will look to regroup before facing New Zealand on February 24 in Rawalpindi.
